On Monday, July 16th (rain date July 17th), between 10 am and 3 pm, we’ll be hosting a Biodiversity Workshop and potluck at the farm! Biodiversity is something that is super important to us and we want to make sure we can maintain and enhance it on our farm. But we need to know other beings live on the farm along with us, why they like living there, and how we can make sure we don’t ruin that. Also, what can we do to attract other species that might like to live on the farm as well.
So, we’re hosting this event because we think other people (young farmers, older farmers, gardeners, food and ecology promoters…) would like to learn about these things as well.
Here’s the info:
Come one, come all! Join Reg Newell, Stewardship Coordinator (NS Dept.of Natural Resources) and Roxanne Beavers, ACORN’s Organic Transition Specialist for this informative workshop on one of the main principles of organic farming: BIODIVERSITY. Learn about the numerous benefits of maintaining on-farm biodiversity and some practical ways we can increase biological habitat for creatures large and small! In turn, these ‘beneficials’ will help you grow the best quality organic food possible! This session will be hosted by Broadfork Farm, from 10am-3pm on Monday, July 16th (rain date: July 17th). Bring a dish for a lunch-time potluck! We will wrap up with a 1-hour work party at 2pm to build a ‘Mini-Beast Mansion,’ to increase biological diversity on the farm. Broadfork Farm is a registered ‘Bee-Friendly’ Farm. Learn more here. Want to learn more about Mini Beast Mansions (they’re pretty cool!)? See here. This workshop is free and open to the public, though all donations are encouraged and will support the development of ACORN’s Grow A Farmer Apprenticeship and Mentorship Program. Broadfork Farm is located at 3630 Boar’s Back Road, River Hebert, NS.
You can also let us know your intentions of joining us on the Facebook Event page. We’d love to have you out. It’s also a great opportunity to visit the farm. And of course, there’s nothing better than a farm potluck!
